Most hospitals carry several thousand pharmaceutical preparations.

Some of these are regulated by the EPA's Resource Conservation and Recovery A
ct (RCRA) standard for disposal, or DOT standards for transport.

Hundreds of others are not regulated by RCRA or DOT, but possess characteristics that have an adverse effect on humans and the environment.

Recent tests show trace elements of pharmaceuticals in the drinking water of every major metro area in the United States.  Consumer waste of pharmaceutical products is the biggest contributor to this problem.  But hospitals are a part of the problem, too.  Over 250,000,000 pounds of waste drugs every year go down the drain or in a landfill.  We do not know the long term effects of this contamination.  We do know that water treatment plants in the US are NOT designed to remove pharmaceutical compounds.  Research has found these wastes have a negative impact on our environment, on drinking water, and on aquatic life.

Using the Niatrox formulary characterization will help reduce your hospital's impact on the environment.  We assign the items in your formulary to the appropriate waste stream.  We have several unique ways to classify these drugs.  Our waste profile includes the following categories that represent federally regulated pharmaceuticals.

  1. RCRA Toxic (ex. Daunomycin, RCRA Code U058)
  2. RCRA Acutely Toxic (ex. Physostigmine Salicylate, RCRA Code P188)
  3. Mixed Infectious Hazardous Waste (ex. Crofab Antivenin, contains both poisonous reptile antivenin and a thimerosal preservative, RCRA Code D009)
  4. DOT Hazardous Material (ex. Fentanyl, DOT 6.1 Listed Poison)
  5. FDA Classified (ex. Misoprostol, FDA Classified Category X Pregnancy Risk)
  6. EPA Regulated (ex. Sevoflurane as EPA Classified Greenhouse Gas)

Other standards include OSHA and NIOSH Toxic materials, Endocrine Disruptors, drugs that have a proven Reproductive Toxicity, Environmentally Hazardous Drugs, and drugs with a very low Median Lethal Dose.
